Staying safe

Passwords worth having

One stolen password usually opens several accounts. Here is the cheapest way to stop that.

When a website is breached, the attackers take the list of emails and passwords and try the same pairs everywhere else. That is why one reused password becomes five lost accounts.

In order of how much they help

  1. Give your email account a password you use nowhere else. Everything else can be reset through your email, so it is the key to the whole set.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication for email, and for anything holding money.
  3. Use a password manager. Your phone already has one built in, and it will offer to make and remember a different password for each site.
  4. Make the ones you have to type long rather than complicated. Three unrelated words beat an eight-character mess with a symbol in it.
